I often get asked what outfits look best on camera for couples. Here are a few tips and examples of outfits that photograph well! Keep scrolling to find what to wear to your engagement photoshoot.
Many couples opt to wear two outfits — I always like to encourage more outfits than less, because you will want more options to choose from for your save the date card or wedding website. I recommend one casual and one formal option for both people. Something to consider is that one outfit can be more timeless and another more trendy.
Take into consideration your location of choice and be sure that your outfits make sense for that location. If your engagement session is happening in a hill country field, consider wearing jeans, cowboy boots, and a hat. If you’re wanting a downtown vibe, look for a snappy casual dress and heels. A very classic option is to see if your wedding venue offers free or discounted engagement session reservations, and any white dress would look fabulous there!
Your partner’s outfit should coordinate with yours, not match. A casual white dress would pair well with boots and jeans, and a more formal dress would pair nicely with a suit. Neutral colors will always be easy to coordinate and give a timeless feel to your photos. Do not try overly hard to be perfectly matched with your partner. I recommend staying away from bold patterns, as the camera doesn’t always handle patterns as well as solids.
Accessories are a tool that should be utilized! A sportcoat can be thrown on over jeans and a button-down to create a more formal look. A men’s cowboy hat can be worn by either the bride or the groom and is a great prop to hold. Heels can be swapped for sneakers or boots, whichever fits your personality more!
I love when clients bring meaningful items to their session, from their grandmother’s necklace to a custom hat with your new initials stamped on it. Have a family member bring your dog for the first or last 15 minutes of your session. Prioritize what is most important to you as a couple, and we can creatively incorporate this into your photographs!
Leigh’s Fun Tip: You’ll already be all dressed up, so why not make dinner reservations after your session? Or meet up with friends to celebrate this exciting time of life and getting one step closer to your wedding day!
